The Line Through Brunswick

The Line Through Brunswick is an extended documentary project about the Upfield train-line, bike path, and surrounding community, undertaken by writer Kevin Brophy and photographer Nicholas Walton-Healey. With the support of the Merri-bek Council and involvement of the Brunswick Community History Group, the project extended over a three-year period (January 2023-March 2026), and yielded several outcomes, including an exhibition at the Brunswick Neighbourhood House, which ran from April 17 until May 19, 2026.

The exhibition consisted of two parts; the first being a slideshow presentation of 33 portrait photographs of project participants (local residents, artists, train and bike commuters, community gardeners, and small-business owners along the line). Each portrait slide included an accompanying text from the participant, these typically resulting from an informal interview. The second part of the exhibition consisted of a creative dialogue between writer and photographer. This extended over 10 text panels and 33 landscape photographs.

The exhibition included an opening (April 17) that featured an introduction from Merri-bek mayor Cr Nat Abboud. It also included an exhibition talk between Elisabeth Jackson, president of the Brunswick Community History Group, and photographer Nicholas Walton-Healey, this being held on Saturday May 2.
