Fox Breath is an extended series detailing the connection I developed with the landscape of Raglan. Situated in rural Western Victoria, on Wadawurrung Country within the Pyrenees Shire and neighbouring the town of Beaufort, this relationship emerged through a process of photographing the area’s long-term residents. Inspired by these encounters, which often led to new or previously unseen parts of the land, I began working on my first exhibition, this occurring in December 2011 at the Raglan Community Hall.

Having seen a few foxes during my ventures, I thought about this project as an attempt to register traces; those as faint and fleeting as I imagined fox breath to be in the cold winter morning air or at dusk, when the fog rolls down the mountain and settles in the gullies. I wanted these photos to capture that sense of fragile presence – a vibrant streak of colour flashing past, before dissolving back into the landscape’s margins and outlier-peripheries.
