The 405 photographs display and narrate the photographer’s journey through the pain of a loss. Produced in the heavy shadow of grief, and the climate of isolation and uncertainty caused by the emergence of COVID-19 pandemic, the photos demonstrate the depth of the trust and friendship underlying Walton-Healey’s connection with his Melbourne-based mentor, Ian McBryde. While conceptualised as a ritualistic means of confronting the spectre of death, the 405 project ultimately led to a rediscovery of artistic purpose and hope. Demonstrating the transformative potential of photography as art, the photographs capture a time and space known to the collaborators as ‘405.’
