Yarro Yarro: reflecting on the unseen is the working title of a project concerned with the ever-flowing surface(s) of The Yarra-Birrarung. Whilst celebrating the play associated with pattern, colour and improvisation, these photographs simultaneously document a transitional process; an attempt, by the artist- photographer to establish a deeper connection to the river and surrounding city of Melbourne.
Inspired by The Bunyip of Berkeley’s Creek (Penguin, 1978), the project’s first outcome assumed the form of a maquette artist book. Through aesthetic play and experimentation, this publication shows the beauty latent in discordance and incongruity. In relation to a river long perceived as dirty and/or dying, the book and project similarly strive to contribute to a broader restorative process; one encouraging us to see the river and world anew.
